A Goal for the Year

I've always wanted to participate in a quilt along, but I usually have so many projects in the works that I can't dedicate the time to really being involved.

BUT, I have found two events that I am super excited in which to be a part.

First, is the Sewing Olympics. Valerie over at Insatiable Need has put this project together. The rules are simple:
  1. Start your sewing project during opening ceremonies (February 12).
  2. Finish your sewing project before closing ceremonies conclude (February 28).
  3. Pick a sewing project that is difficult for you, but attainable in sixteen days. You are supposed to be challenged, but don't set yourself up for failure, or let it take over your life! That being said, sixteen days is a long time to work on one project...make it something good!
I've decided to make Pinky's Rainbow Quilt my Olympic project. I have the fabric cut, but have not started sewing. Think I can make a quilt in just over 2 weeks while juggling 3 kids? Oh boy!

The second event is going to be even more challenging for me. Sarah at Come and See the Seitz has set up a Pattern Challenge. Check out the rules here.

I *think* I will set a goal to sew one article of clothing for each of the kids before the end of the year. That might seem simple, but it's huge for me. I am a complete novice when it comes to sewing clothing. I'm on the search now for easy children's patterns. Any suggestions?

What about you - have you joined any sew alongs or craft alongs this year?

If you're new to sewing, especially sewing clothes, I suggest pajama pants. They are SO easy. Most pajama pant patterns are pretty much the same. Most years for Christmas, I make the kids matching pajamas pants and then use some of the fabric from the pj's to make appliques on cheap T-shirts I buy or repurpose. Shirts are way more work to sew, so I prefer to use ready made ones and then add the appliques.

An easy dress which I've done 3 times now is New Look 6796 - no zippers, no buttons, no elastic. You can see one of my versions of it here: http://nanannwoogies.wordpress.com/2009/11/02/happy-dia-de-los-muertos/

I only started doing apparel when my now 4-year-old was 2, and was also frightened, but now I make them clothes all the time. TONS of fun!
